Anecdotal Information
This building has housed a variety of businesses over the years, though in its first decades it served as a gas station (or, to use the terminology of when it was built, filling station). According to the Lynchburg City Directory, the following gas stations were located at 306 Rivermont: from 1927-1929 Rivermont Oil and Supply Company, Inc., from 1930-1936 Continental Oil Company, in 1937 William E. Martin, in 1938 Knowles & Williams, from 1939-1942 and again from 1946-1948 Claude B. Knowles, from 1942-1943 Strange & Sprouse, in 1949 Rivermont Conoco Station, and from 1950-1960 Rivermont Cities Service Station. The building then switched purposes from 1962-1964, serving as Virginia Laundry Co. Inc. Returning to its original purpose, from 1967-1970 it was Rivermont Sinclair Service Station, in 1971 Rivermont BP Service Station, ad then from 1974-1976 Reginald Q. & Augustus S. Phelps, car repair. From 1976-2007 it was Sea Boy Incorporated, seafood store
and from 2008-2014, Aquarium. The building stood empty for several years, with its new owners Daryl W. & Johanna Calfee working on their exciting plans for the building. On Nov. 6, 2020, Bacon St. Bagels was opened by D & J Calfee LLC.
